Answers to Typical Title One Questions
Q: What is Title One?
A: Title One is a program funded by the federal government. Money is given to school districts to help children who are not performing on grade level. In USD 205, Title One instruction is for reading and math for grades K-6.
Q: Who benefits from Title One?
A: Title One programs are designed to help the children who need it most. At Bluestem Elementary we consider those students who are six months or more behind their classmates in reading and/or math to have the greatest need. Our goal is to help children early in education.
Q: How was my child chosen for Title One services?
A: Your child’s teacher had concerns about his/her performance in the classroom. They then filled out a referral sheet and gave it to the Student Improvement Team. If applicable your child’s State Assessment scores in math and / or reading were reviewed. In grades K- 1 a student’s DIBELS scores are looked at. Classroom interventions were applied, and individual testing by the Title teacher was completed. Students who are new to the district and were receiving services at their previous school would be eligible for Title services in USD 205 as well.
Q: How long will my child have Title services?
A: Children will remain in Title One until they make a significant gain in their reading or math ability. A recommendation by the classroom teacher and the Title One teacher, along with documentation of progress will be used to determine if a child no longer needs Title One services. Student progress will be documented throughout the time they are in the program. Progress reports will be sent home at the end of each nine weeks.
Q: How will my child receive services?
A: Your child will be assisted with reading and/or math through a combination of in-class and/or out-of-class instruction. They will receive Title One assistance in collaboration with the classroom teacher during regular math and reading instruction within the classroom, AND/OR they will receive individual and/or small group instruction from a Title One teacher up to four days a week.
Q: How can I help?
A: Set aside time and a specific place for homework and reading every night. Praise your child’s efforts in school focusing on progress and improvement. Get involved in as many activities at school as you can. Showing your student that school is important to you will help it become important to them. There will be a parent meeting available for you to attend on August 24, 2015 at 6:00pm. Also be sure and check my website via a link on the school’s web page for additional tips and up coming events.
